The Swamp Fox pioneered the use of guerilla warfare tactics and was willing to do whatever it took to defeat the British, because his sweetheart is liberty!
U.S. Special Forces traces their lineage back to the First Special Service Force (FSSF) that was created in 1942 to conduct unconventional warfare in Nazi-occupied Norway. However, unconventional tactics have been used much earlier than this in American history. Francis Marion, known as the Swamp Fox, used irregular methods of warfare against British troops during the Revolutionary War. As a result, he is not only considered one of the fathers of modern guerrilla warfare, but is also credited in the lineage of the U.S. Army Rangers and other American military Special Forces such as the Green Berets.
Marion frequently eluded the British by traveling along swamp paths and utilized this strategy to launch quick attacks on British troops, after which he and his men would disappear as quickly as they attacked.
Marion was actually given the name “Swamp Fox” by British troops who tried to follow him down swamp paths but could never find him!
