Behind the Brand

In the military, a Nine Line is a medevac request for a soldier that is injured on the battlefield. To soldiers, a Nine Line symbolizes patriotism, hope, and trust in one’s countrymen.

As a life-style brand, Nine Line Apparel aims to reinvigorate the sense of patriotism and national pride that is disappearing daily from our society. Where politics and dissent divide our country, we hope to inspire unity and brotherhood among all Americans as patriots under our common flag.

At its core, Nine Line is a give-back organization, forever striving to be our brother’s keeper, and encouraging others to do the same. We support a multitude of initiatives beyond raising awareness, and financially back organizations that help those in need. From first responders to military charities to disaster relief initiatives, Nine Line is committed to ongoing support of charitable initiatives. Respect the flag and what it stands for. The flag represents the sacrifices made by those who have fought and died to preserve our freedom and should be honored as a sacred symbol of all we stand for.

Support those who have and continue to serve honorably as members of the military, police, fire department, or any other public service. Hold those who abuse their power accountable but understand they do not represent the entirety of those who serve to protect us.

Third, and most importantly, being patriotic is nothing to be ashamed of. We at Nine Line are proud of our country, our flag, and our birthright, and it is our goal to reinvigorate this pride into our nation once again.

The Nine Line Call to Action

Nine Line Apparel represents the grit and commitment of all Patriotic Americans. Founded on the principles similar to other value based organizations, Nine Line aims to promote the issues faced by all those who have served their country, on both foreign and domestic soil. Nine Line encourages a conversation between those who serve and those who support them.

Our goal is to bridge the gap between civilians and service members, whether they are military veterans, law enforcement, or first responders. At Nine Line, we know that only united can the American people fight injustice and preserve our freedom and independence. We aim to be a voice for the people, a channel through which patriotic Americans can make themselves heard.

Nine Line Apparel came from a humble beginning where most startups find themselves. A special operations Captain, his wife, brother (an Army CPT as well) and civilian SCAD grad founded Nine Line in a garage and transformed it to one of the fastest growing companies in the country in under three years.



Daniel Merritt: Co-Founder
Daniel enlisted in the army at the age of 18 and spent three years stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany. He transitioned to become an officer in 2002. He deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as a Military Police officer, earning a bronze star for his actions while deployed. MAJ Merritt currently serves in the Army Reserve.



Angela Merritt: Co-Founder
A military spouse, Angela understands the trials and tribulations of managing the household while Tyler deployed. During the initial stages of Nine Line’s growth, Angela went above and beyond what any spouse should be expected to do, putting her studies to become a nurse on hold to manage the day to day operations while Tyler deployed.



Tyler Merritt: Co-Founder
Former Apache Helicopter Pilot turned Special Operations Air Mission Commander in the 160th SOAR. Tyler deployed multiple times to Iraq, Afghanistan, the Arabian Peninsula, and South America in support of special operations earning the bronze star and numerous air medals for his actions in combat.



Myles Burke: Co-Founder
During his studies at SCAD, Myles began working with the Merritt's in late 2011. Without a vehicle to call his own, Tyler would pick him up after class to collaborate and visualize Nine Line's message of being Relentlessly Patriotic. Myles's no-fail mentality has been heavily influenced by working alongside true American heroes.

The challenges of
 a
 Start-Up

What initially was conceived as a promotional products company between two brothers, evolved into the brand Nine Line Apparel in 2012 . It began in Tyler's garage, and eventually the operation moved to a small house. When Tyler was deployed shortly before the holidays in 2013, Daniel and Angela, Tyler’s then pregnant wife, stepped up to manage their first holiday rush, printing, packaging, and shipping shirts throughout Thanksgiving and Christmas. The house didn't sustain the business long, and they moved the company to a small storefront near downtown Savannah in 2014.

Though the storefront initially seemed to have an abundance of space, ten months hadn't passed before we outgrew our new home. Even after leasing the property next door, purchasing half a dozen shipping conexes, and installing two mobile office trailers, our rate of growth continues to surpass our available space. The parking lot of Nine Line has become a vehicular game of Tetris and musical cars.

With the pressure on to grow the brand, Nine Line focused on hiring Veterans, military spouses, and patriotic Americans to manage the explosive growth. Due to the tenacity and innovation of the Nine Line team the brand exploded, allowing Nine Line to hire over 140 patriotic Americans and veterans by fall of 2016, and growing a fanbase over 1 million strong in under three years. Every member of the management team at Nine Line has worked their way from entry level positions. What started as a two man team with no screen printing experience in 2015, has turned into the largest printing facility in a 100 mile radius. As the company continues to grow, we look forward to putting more and more patriotic Americans and veterans to work.

Future of Nine Line

It didn’t take long for Nine Line to outgrow the storefront property near downtown Savannah. Plans for 2017 are already underway for us to move to our forever home, a brand new 50,000 square foot warehouse on 300 acres outside Savannah.

Nine Line is committed to continuing to create jobs here in America. We have made a conscious decision to move away from foreign made materials wherever possible, and are committed to creating a cut & sew factory here in Savannah, GA in the next three years. Although remaining profitable is the tenet of any successful business, we have innovative ways to ensure this occurs while returning manufacturing to the US. We will continue to hone our skills in the Apparel industry while expanding to markets outside of Apparel.

SPC Justin Hickox: Production
Military Affiliation: Justin enlisted in the Army in 2009 and went through basic training at Fort Sill. He served as a Fire Support Specialist with 4ID out of Fort Carson, with one deployment in Afghanistan. He left the Army as a SPC in 2013.



PO3 Savanna Newsome: Chief Production Manager
Military Affiliation: Savanna enlisted in the Navy in 2009 and went through basic training at RTC Great Lakes. She served as a Construction Electrician with BCo NMCB 133 out of Gulfport, MS, and served one deployment in Afghanistan. She left the Navy in 2013 as a PO3.



SGT Zac Scalf: Sales Associate and Model
Military Affiliation: Zac enlisted in the Army in 2001 and went through basic training at Fort Benning. He served as an Infantrymen with the 10th MTN Div, and served three deployments, one to Kosovo, and two in Iraq. He left the Army in 2005 as a SGT.



SGT Thomas Jackson: Sales Associate
Military Affiliation: Jack enlisted in the Army in 2006 and went through basic training at Fort Sill. He served as an Army Cannon Crewmember with 3rd ID for two deployments in Iraq, and left the Army as a SGT.



CPT Dan Silver: Production
Military Affiliation: Dan enlisted in the Marines in 2001 and went through basic training at Parris Island. He served as an Infantryman with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, and served one deployment in Iraq. He left the Marines in 2005 as a CPT, and enlisted in the Army National Guard, where he served with the 3-172 IN MTN Div. He served one deployment in Afghanistan, and is still active in the Guard.



LCpl Kevin Doherty: Production
Military Affiliation: Kevin enlisted in the Marines in 1999 and went through basic training at MCR in San Diego. He served as a Field Radio Operator with the 1st Battalion 12th Marines, and was deployed to Australia and Okinawa during his service. He left the Marines as a LCpl in 2003.



SSG(R) Jason Norton: Senior Designer
Military Affiliation: Jason enlisted in the Army at the age of 24 and went through basic training at Fort Benning. As an infantryman, he served one deployment with the 10th MTN Div out of Ft. Polk, LA in Afghanistan, and two deployments with 3rd ID out of Ft. Stewart in Iraq. He was medically retired as a SSG from the service in 2013.



CPL Matthew Baker: Production
Military Affiliation: Matt enlisted in the Marines in 2010 and went through basic training at Parris Island. He served as a Semitrailer Refueler Operator and Motor Vehicle Operator out of MWSS 274th MCAS Cherry Point, NC, until leaving the Marines in 2014 as a CPL.

The hard work and dedication over the past few years have proven themselves in the most recent recognitions awarded to us. Most recently Nine Line has been awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year award by Savannah, Internet Retailer proclaimed us the fastest growing online retailer, BigCommerce declared our site the best designed website out of 3,000 applicants, and most notably Inc 5000 declared us the 31st fastest growing company in the entire United States.
